Registration will be $5 per person, and teams may be from 2-4 people.Scavenger Hunt starts at O'Connell Center parking lot 7:45 - 8:00 PM. Instructions will be given there. The hunt will conclude at the house of Brad Wilkes, right next to the O'Connell Center. parking lot at 2260 W. University Avenue. If you wish to stay around after the Scavenger Hunt, there will be snacks, drinks, and games. Theme: Informational Meeting
TOPIC: Special Needs Trusts, Wills, & Estate Planning. Speaker is attorney Shannon Miller, who specializes in special needs trusts, wills, and estate planning relating to family members who have a mental illness.
TOPIC: Social Security Speaker.Cliff Copeland is a Public Affairs Specialist from the Social Security Administration. Mr. Copeland will speak and there will be plenty of time for your questions. Come with all of your questions about Social Security as related to our loved ones with a mental illness.
October 6-12 is Mental Illness Awarenes Week in Gainesville, on the UF campus, as well as Nationally. Gainesville NAMI, the UF medical student Psychiatry Interest Group, the UF Office College of Medicine of Student Counseling and Development, the Medical Humanities Program, the UF Psychiatry Department, and Shands at Vista, and NEFSH have put together events for this week. Please feel free to join in the following events:
1. Monday-Friday: Stop by the front of the UF College of Medicine medical library for free pamphlets, stickers, and silver "Campaign for the brain" ribbons to show your support, and learn something new in the process!
2. Monday-Friday: Exhibit in the UF College of Medicine Maren room of Maren-owned books and movies related to mental health. Sponsored by the UF College of Medicine Medical Humanities Program.
3. From October 6 – 11 a public exhibit “Transformations in Mental Illness Treatment” combines a traveling museum photo essay featuring the suitcase contents of 10 individuals who lived in a 120 year old NY mental institution in the last century, as contrasted against the current progress toward local humanitarian treatments and community involvment in our area.The exhibit can be viewed set up in the UF College of Medicine Library lobby.For more information, email info@namigainesville.org
4. Friday, October 11, 9:30-3 in the Shands at AGH atrium: Free Mental Health Screenings. Licensed mental health professionals, representatives from the NAMI, and medical student volunteers will be available for mental health screenings throughout the day. Sponsored by Shands at Vista, UF Psychiatry Department, and NAMI. You can also take the screening youself online at: www.shands.org/hospitals/vista .
5. The annual Mental Illness Awareness Golf Tournament is Monday October 6, 2008 at the Country Club of Orange Park.The course is filled with side games to win such prizes as a set of jet skis, a new truck, and vacation packages. The day ends with an awards ceremony complete with a gourmet meal, trophies and door prizes for all! Tee time is 9:00 A. M.Lunch and awards will be at 2:30 pm. Proceeds go to the Resident Enhancement Fund to pay for special projects and programs of Northeast Florida State Hospital. Topic: 911 Dispatch Manager is featured speaker
Clara Woody-Redmon is the Support Services Manager for Alachua County Sheriff's Office 911 Combined Communications Center. She will speak about the 911 center and hopefully its attentiveness to mental illness crises, and will answer our questions.
Importantly, Sheriff Darnell recently required 911 personnel to be trained in the CIT course, which is a 40 hour course on mental illness for law officer.

We will view the award winning movie,"Out of the Shadow" (67 min), which we purchased on high res DVD for our NAMI lending library. This is currently being aired on PBS nationwide, but somehow not on any Cox Cable channels. The movie will follow a brief annual meeting.
The topic will be "Mental Illness Jail Diversion Initiatives in Alachua County" presented by Sadie Darnell, Community Relations Coordinator of Gainesville Police Dept, and Law Enforcement Officer of the Year (Florida, 2000). Sadie Darnell is also a member of our NAMI group.
In her career with law enforcement, she has become dedicated to and knowledgeable about issues surrounding mental illnesses, jail diversion, and mental health court.
Meetings are now held at Trinity United Methodist Church (4000 NW 53rd Ave, Gainesville, FL), not at Vista anymore.

Annual Forth of July Celebration with fireworks, pony rides,food, parade, and booth activites on the grounds of the Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) in Macclenny, Florida.
Two topic speakers this month: (1) Local attorney Kevin Daly to speak on special wills and trusts set up for family members with a mental illness; and second topic is (2) Results of schizophrenia research project with University of Florida.

Special one day public forum sponsored by the Department of Children and Families, Meridian Behavioral Healthcare, FACT, NAMI, and other agencies.
The theme of the forum is to inform consumers and community mental health providers about possible ways to transform the recovery process in the mental health system of Florida.
An especially important workshop will be on potential for starting a local "Clubhouse" drop-in center modeled after the Vincent House clubhouse project of Pinellas Park, Florida.

"Governor's Working Group on the Americans with Disabilities Act Real Choice Partnership Project Consumer Task Force." (click here for info link to website )
Time: 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Best Western hotel in Gainesville.
The purpose is to hear community testimony, experiences, and suggestions in order to identify support service needs and eliminate barriers for persons with disabilities and long term illnesses.
This is a special public hearing opportunity for our NAMI local members to portray the concept that people with a mental illness make up the single largest disability group in America (among survivors of a disease or disorder), as published in a Harvard study.
The Governor’s Task Force must be made aware of mental illness needs in the face of classic disability issues such as wheel chair access, etc.
At this hearing we will present our NAMI affiliate co-presidents' prioritized list of needs:
(1) public transportation and housing;
(2) need for a drop-in center;
(3) funding for community awareness and anti-stigma programs.
